The Newlands Celebration began with a kick off in June of
2002 at Lahontan Reservoir. In July, 2002 the Centennial was celebrated in
Fernley at the fourth of July activities and in Silver Springs at the "Stew Do".
In August 2002, a Congressional Tour of the Lahontan Valley and a tour of the
newly restored Oats Park Arts Center was held. On Labor Day weekend, 2002, the
Newlands Celebration, in conjunction with the Fallon Chamber of Commerce, helped
bring back the County Fair to the Cantaloupe Festival.
In conjunction with the Newlands Water Protective
Associations, Ag Expo, a banquet was held where past and present Board members
of the Truckee Carson Irrigation District were honored. The Newlands Celebration
culminated in March 2003 with a reenactment of the 1905 Derby Dam dedication.
The Churchill County Museum has published the IN FOCUS
Magazine which includes many historic articles relating to the Newlands Project
Celebration as well as an article and pictures concerning the Newlands
Celebration. The IN FOCUS Magazine can be purchased through LVEA or at the
Churchill County Museum.
The final and most permanent project is a Mobile Museum
that is being created by converting a Mayflower moving van. After the
renovations and construction, this portable classroom/museum will be available
to local schools, community groups, festivals, or to anyone who has an interest
in learning more about the past, present and future of the Newlands Project. To
reserve the Mobile Museum for your event contact LVEA.
Ernie Schank, President of the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District is the
Chair of the Celebration Committee.
