CONSERVATION AND RESOURCE PROTECTION PROJECTS MAY SOON
BE FUNDED

Conservation and resource protection projects for Lahontan Valley were discussed at a recent Question 1 Conservation and Resource Protection Grant Program meeting coordinated by Lahontan Valley Environmental Alliance.

Participants in the meeting listed several possible projects for the Lahontan Valley that might be eligible for funding through the Question 1Bond Act. The list includes river restoration, open space, reservoir, lake and river parks, trails, conservation easements, and revegetation projects.

Question 1 is a landmark environmental initiative designed to benefit, protect and preserve Nevada’s state, regional and local natural resources. It authorizes the State to issue general obligation bonds up to $200,000,000 for natural resource projects. The public will use funds generated by the bond sales to conserve valuable environmental assets of the state and to support recreational and cultural facilities that further the enjoyment of those assets. Almost half of the bond funds must be matched with other funding. The first grants should be made in the Fall 2003.

The following allocations are included in the program:

Department of Natural Resources – $65,500,000

  • $10,000,000 – Carson River Corridor - facilitated by Carson Water Subconservany District (CWSD).

  • $7,250,000 – state, county, city, nonprofit organizations for trails - facilitated by Division of State Parks (DOSP).

  • $5,000,000 – state, county, city, nonprofit organizations for acquisition of land and water for urban parks and green belts – facilitated by DOSP.

  • $3,000,000 – rural counties and cities – habitat conservation plans – facilitated by Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) and Natural Heritage Program.

  • $250,000 – rural counties and cities for open space plans.

  • $20,000,000 – counties, cities for land and water acquisition to protect environmental values pursuant to open space plans.

  • $15,000,000 - for contracts or agreements under which nonprofit conservation organizations may acquire land and water for environmental purposes.

Division of State Parks - $27,000,000 – to acquire property for parks and recreation and to support extraordinary capital improvements and renovations in State Parks.

Division of Wildlife – $27,500,000 – to acquire property in regard to wildlife and wildlife habitat, and to develop facilities and habitat for fish and wildlife.

Washoe County - $10,000,000 – to restore/enhance the Truckee River corridor – 50% match.

Remainder to Las Vegas:

  • Las Vegas Spring Preserve - $25,000,000

  • Clark County - $10,000,000

  • Museums, Library and Arts - $35,000,000
